Gauldin, Claude Swanson, Jr., 92, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather born in Schoolfield, VA, now Danville, VA to the late Claude S., Sr. and Ocey Wood Gauldin. He graduated from GEO Washington High School in 1941 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the outbreak of WWII service mostly in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in May 1945. Claude was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved being in the mountains. He held several occupations finally retiring from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a campus police officer at Virginia Western Community College. He was predeceased by his wife, Geneva Pruitt Gauldin who he married on November 11, 1944 at the Naval Operating Base in Norfolk, VA. Surviving family includes his children, Claude S. “Ozzie” Gauldin, III and wife, Sandra, and Susanne Gauldin Payne; grandchildren, Melissa Capps and Angela Payne; sister, Patricia Martin; sister-in-law, Lois Toler; great grandchildren, Jessie Peters and wife, Alisha, Jaime Plunkett and Aaron Capps; great-great granddaughter, Abby Peters; special nephew, Dennis James; many other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Lotz Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
