Obituary

Roy Junior Sweeney passed away early Wednesday June 1, 2022, at the age of 95 in Roanoke, Virginia. In his final days he was cared for by the devoted staff at Springtree Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Roy was born July 23, 1926, he worked for the City of Roanoke for 34 years, in addition to working theater and stage events at the Civic Center. Roy loved fishing and hunting. He enjoyed talking about and working on vehicles and small engines. He never met a stranger; he would lend an ear to anyone who needed it and would enjoy a casual conversation with the closest person. He was a fan of movies like The Cannonball Run, Smokey and the Bandit, and during the holidays he particularly loved Home Alone. he also enjoyed the cartoon Tom and Jerry. Roy was blessed with a large and loving family, and married his best friend and partner in life, Edith Mae.

Like his brothers he was drafted to serve his country in World War II. He served with the United States Army. Not only serving their country with pride he and his brothers accomplished and incredible feat, they all came home. Roy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.
He made an impact on anyone he met and will be missed dearly.
Roy was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 60 years, Edith Mae Sweeney; His parents James Charlie Sweeney and Annie Holloway Sweeney; His brothers Randolph Sweeney and Curtis Sweeney; His sisters Ruby Williamson and Viola Jenkins; His son Roy Lee Sweeney; and his granddaughter Ashley Taylor Sweeney.

He is survived by his brother Calvin Sweeney; His son Charles Edward Sweeney along with his wife Melissa Sweeney; His daughter Linda Atkinson; His 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 5, 2022 from 4-6 p.m. at Lotz Vinton Chapel , A graveside service will be held Monday. June 6, 2022 at Cedar Lawn Cemetery with Rev, Kevin McNeil officiating,
