Roy Mason "Mac" Shelor, 73, of Vinton, passed away Monday, November 5, 2018. He had no local surviving family but many friends and neighbors who loved him very much.
Mac always enjoyed spending time with his Vinton neighbors. When he was able to get out on his own he would go to McDonald’s for a biscuit and a soda and then to Grand Rental Station and Goodwill. He especially liked talking to his friends at Grand Rental, Chris McCarty, Sabrina McCarty, Dana Boyd, Tom Ralph, Debbie Cooper, and all the delivery boys. Mac loved Christmas gifts from his favorite railroad, Norfolk Southern. Every year, Randy Shilling, Shannon Hodges, Jeff Thomas, Mike Roberts, and Richard Goad would gather up Norfolk Southern items to give him at a Grand Rental Christmas lunch. Mac’s birthday was in January and each year Chris would take him out to lunch and to the Transportation Museum to buy him a new Norfolk Southern item. They went to many different restaurants including the Texas Tavern, Western Sizzling, Liberty Station, and the 611 Steak House. Mac’s other great love was records. He had a collection of thousands with his favorite artist being Roger Williams. Later when he was unable to get out on his own he would call Grand Rental daily to check on Chris, Deb, and the boys. Debbie was especially attentive to Mac when he called, asking how he was doing, and then taking needed items to his apartment. He would always request a drink and Debbie, Chris, or one of the boys would take him a drink and a snack. Over the years, Mac had several care givers who assisted him. In his last years, Deja Napper and Roy Grant with Helping Hands would take Mac out to his favorite places to eat and to see the Norfolk Southern trains. He was a very appreciative and loving person and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of his life will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the Lotz Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton. Friends may call from 1-2 PM prior to the service. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park
