Obituary
Robert Norman Guthrie born on November 13, 1927 had a victorious entrance into his eternal home on October 4, 2018 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by Dorothy Kincer Guthrie, his wife of over 50 years. He was the youngest of eleven children to the parents of Lewis and Betsy Foley Guthrie who also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, Timothy Norman (wife, Janet Vest Guthrie) and grandson, Jonathan Seth Guthrie (mother, Kelly Hubbard) and Seth’s loving girlfriend, Kate Brummer. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
We personally thank Evelyn Wirt, a longtime friend and faithful companion of Robert's as they spent many years watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune together.
Robert often referred to himself as a '27 model and during this journey of his earthly life he toured Japan with the Navy, and served with the Roanoke City Fire & EMS Department for forty years, retiring at the rank of Captain. Robert was a 50 plus year Mason with Lakeland Masonic Lodge, and a faithful member of Glade Creek and St. Timothy's Lutheran Church. Most of all, he was a wonderful provider, loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather.
Robert enjoyed the last two years at the Veterans Care Center where he greeted many of the precious caretakers on 1 East as "sugar" or "sweetheart". They each lovingly welcomed Robert and cared for him as if he were their father.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. TImothy's Lutheran Church, 1201 Hardy Road, Vinton, VA 24179.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, October 8, 2018 at the Lotz Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Pastor James Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Glade Creek Cemetery, Blue Ridge. The family will receive friends from 11 AM till 1:00 PM prior to the service.
