Obituary
Margaret Keeler Wood, 94, of Vinton, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 6, 2021. She was born September 29, 1926 in Front Royal, Va. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph McCauley Keeler and Nora Elizabeth Thomas; husband, Robert (Bob) Carson Wood; son, Thomas Allen Wood; brother, Joseph Thomas Keeler and wife, Nancy; sister, Thelma Elizabeth Keeler, and sister-in-law, Sandra Keeler.
Surviving family includes her brother, James L. Keeler; children, Barry (Susan) Wood and Bonnie (James) Short; daughter-in-law, Karen Wood; grandchildren, Jason Wood, Ryan (Vee) Wood, Tamasa Witt, Allen (Alisha) Wood, Ashley (Kellen) Williams, Kelly Short, Jamie (Chris) Duncan, and Katie S. (Chris) Fitzgerald, and numerous great-grandchildren.
When Margaret Wood’s family saw a pie or cake, fresh out of the oven, their question wasn’t “may I have a piece?” but “where are you taking that”. On many occasions the homemade goodie was destined for a gathering at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church where she has been an active and loyal member since she was 14 years old. She graduated from WBHS in 1945 where she played basketball, sang in choir and was Homecoming Queen in 1944. She married the love of her life in 1946. She has always been proud to be a “Vintonite”. She was Roanoke’s 1978 Mother of the Year in religious activities, charter member of the Vinton Woman’s Club, member of Vinton’s Historical Society, and Vinton’s Planning Commission. She loved flowers, working in her yard, bowling, but most importantly, she was bookkeeper of our family owned business, Wood’s Service Center.
Many thanks to the staff of Our Lady of the Valley for their love and care, especially, Beth Allen and Jennifer Dawn, and to Jean Delong, thanks for being mom’s best friend at OLOV. Thanks to Thrasher Church and all the many cards and visits. Mom loved her cards. Thanks for Good Samaritan Hospice’s care, and social worker, Jean, and chaplain Tammy.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton with Pastor B. Failes and Pastor Al Woodie officiating. Online condolences may be made at www.lotzfuneralhomevinton.com
