James Matthew Myers, 37, of Vinton, Virginia went to be with his Lord on June 16, 2019, at the University of Virginia Hospital after a short struggle with a mysterious lung disease. James was born on December 17, 1981 in Roanoke, Virginia.
He is survived by his mother, Karen Sue Lawson Hefner, and father Gary James Myers; grandmother, Mary Dudley Myers: aunts, Debra Myers Singleton, Sheila L. Taylor; cousins on his father’s side Jessica Singleton Ball and daughter Lilian, Jennifer Singleton Bird, and cousins on his mother’s side Carey Taylor Boles and Scott Taylor.
James is remembered for his love of mountain biking, swimming and other outdoor activities. He was a familiar figure at the family’s campsite along Craig Creek. He had a special love for his young cousin, Lillian, and also had a strong compassion for children of his friends. He is particularly remembered for his closeness to his dog, Maverick, a wonderful bull terrier that was his constant companion. James will be missed by his family and friends, for his bright smile and willingness to help.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, June 22 at 1:00pm, at Hollins Road Baptist Church, 3502 Old Mountain Road, NE Roanoke, 24019. Visitors may meet with the family following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in James’ name to a local animal shelter or a charity of your choice. Suggested animal shelters include:
