Herman Edward Olsen, Jr., 87, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018. He was born in Tacoma, WA, son of the late H.E. Olsen and Anna Blomgren and served in the U S Navy during the Korean War. He belonged to the American Legion Post 80 in Vinton where he served as Post Commander. He was also district commander for American Legion for a year and belonged to the 40 & 8. Mr. Olsen also belonged to the VFW post 4522 in Vinton.
Surviving family includes his wife, Ellen; brother, Roger Olsen (Mary); sister, Lois Simonetti of Petaluma, CA; daughters, Paulette Thatcher (Tom) of Hanover, PA, Barbara Mendiola of Charlotte, NC, Jane Olsen of Roanoke, Sandra Lyden (Ralph) of Derby, CT, and Tricia Morris (Aaron) of Salem; grandchildren, Jeremy Thatcher (Marilu) of Baltimore, MD, Krista Olsen of Seattle, WA, Rebecca Thatcher of York, PA, Ian Bennett (Kim) of San Mateo, CA, Stephannie Homa (James) of Wallingford, CT, and Sarah Bean (Richard) of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren, Aislinn and Maeve Thatcher of Baltimore, MD, Charlotte Grace and Every Rose of Charlotte, NC, and Dylan Morris of Salem.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, July 9, 2018 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Roanoke. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke.
