Faye Gardner Mitchell

Faye Gardner Slusher Mitchell, 98, of Christiansburg, was called home to her family and her Savior on Sunday, Dec 16, 2018. Faye was born on October 31, 1920, the third child of seven born to John Ennis and Lena Harris Gardner on the family farm in Floyd, VA. She helped raise her younger siblings and enjoyed her family very much. As the last surviving sibling she was able to spend many years with her nieces and nephews. Her family joined with her in celebrating her 98th birthday in October. Faye was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Christiansburg. She enjoyed the fellowship of her friends there and also enjoyed planning bus trips to see sights far and near. Faye was a beautician for many years and was still working to make her friends and relatives look their best even into her 90s. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands Joseph H Slusher and Paul H Mitchell. Additionally her seven siblings preceded her in death: Guy Gardner, Wayne Gardner, Addie Mae Turman, Esther Rogers, Laryrane Conrad, Pauline Quesenberry and Willie Gardner. While Faye did not have children of her own, she and her husband Paul raised several foster children. She also included her nieces and nephews in all aspects of her life.

She was the beloved Aunt Faye to three generations who loved her black walnut and orange slice cakes as well as the quilts she made to keep them warm and remind them of her love. Faye encouraged those she loved and was always ready to celebrate with them—usually with a sit down meal finished off by her delicious cakes. Faye is survived by her stepson E. Maurice Mitchell and his wife Gaynell as well as her beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Lotz Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Pastor Mike Vest officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
