Perry Leland Forbes, 87, of Goodview, VA., passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 17, 2017. Born in Wirtz, in Franklin County VA., he was the son of Robert Greene Forbes and Laura Bessie Crook Forbes. He was a member of Goodview Baptist Church, serving as Deacon, Trustee, choir member, working with Awana and Vacation Bible School, and compiling hours of video for projects and programs performed by the church.
Perry retired from the Kroger Company in Glenvar, Va. In 1992, after 41 years of service, prior to that, he was a Linotype Machine Operator for the Miami Daily News in Florida. After retiring from Kroger, he spent several years volunteering, then working for the Explore Park in Roanoke, VA., helping with the reconstruction of the old buildings moved to the park. He was responsible for construction of the waterwheel at the Old Mill.
He was an avid birder, loved traveling and photography and enjoyed NASCAR. He could build and repair any and all things and loved living at Smith Mountain Lake since 1973.
Perry was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Louise Estes Forbes, and an infant son, Phillip; his father and mother, Robert Greene and Laura Bessie Crook Forbes, brother; James “Jimmy” Carlton Forbes, step mother; Mable Reynolds Forbes, step-sister Lois Cantrell and step-brother Lewis Leftwich.
Left to cherish his precious memory are his daughters, Carolyn Rebecca Roberts and Rita Louann Forbes; granddaughters’ ; Kim Wade (Mike), Alysha Phillips (Bruce Deadrick); great-granddaughter, Emily Morgan Wade; great-grandson, Konnor Perry Phillips; brothers, Gene Nathaniel Forbes, wife Naomi and family, Raymond “Ray” Roosevelt Forbes and wife Ina. He is also survived by many dear friends, nieces and nephews, and his precious dog Maggie Sue.
The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Bauer, and “Susie” of Physicians Associates of Virginia, for their dedicated care over the years.
The family will receive friends, Sunday, August 20, 2017, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Lotz Vinton Chapel. A celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Lotz Vinton Chapel. Burial will be private.
